THE DESIGN:
The waterside part of the house, or the west wing as it was referred to during construction, contains the kitchen, dining and living rooms and was part of the footprint of the pre existing building. Our brief was to keep the kitchen and living areas on the upper level and on the ground level provide bedrooms for the family while working within existing retained walls.

The brief also called for accommodation for extended family and friends (the east wing) to be remote from the main family part of the house. The study and courtyards serve as separators between the west wing and the east wing with the bridge connecting both areas together.

The shutters along the north face of the east wing provide sun control and privacy with the slots allowing connection to sun and garden. The shuttered wall forms a continuation of the timber cladding around the entry. The pivoting shutters at the east wing courtyard allow visitors to have a connection back to the garden.
